The Goal
Keep a record as I play my way through video game history!
The Process
I'm going through the MobyGames database in chronological order. If a game fulfills my selection criteria, I'll play it at that point provided I'm able to find a copy and get it working on my PC.
Basic Requirements
● English text
● Single-player
● No external server required
All games which fail to meet the basic requirements are excluded from further consideration.
General Preferences
● Genre: RPG, Action, Adventure, Puzzle, Strategy
● Setting: Fantasy, Sci-Fi
● Sexual content
I'm primarily interested in commercial releases and will ignore unofficial add-ons. I intend to play a lot of games from the genres I like, especially RPGs, as well as anything else I'm curious about. The 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die which meet the basic requirements automatically qualify.
Platform
In case a game is available on multiple systems and there's more than one eligible version, I'll pick the one that appeals to me the most based on amount of content, gameplay, and graphics. All things being roughly equal, the PC version is always going to be my first choice. If none exists, it's either the platform the game was developed on or the one I like the best. I prefer to play all games in a series on the same system, so there will likely be exceptions. Doing it this way means I'll often play a later conversion at the point the original came out, though versions with significant differences are treated as separate games.
Playtime
I'll try to approach each game with an open mind and play it with the intention to finish it. If it lacks a winning condition, is too difficult for me, or I simply don't like it enough, I'll attempt to at least complete one area, chapter, level, round, scenario, stage, or whatever is applicable.
Rating & Review
My rating depends on how positive or negative my playing experience was, which is influenced by many factors. I'm easily annoyed and don't have much patience either, so I expect the majority of titles won't receive a high rating. Each game will get a review accompanied by three screenshots from its gallery: the title screen, one with gameplay, and either the game over or the ending screen. For more complex games like RPGs and adventures, I might do a detailed write-up.
